In January, Shirin Alex joined the KNCV-team as a Community Manager. In this exciting new role, she aims to create an onboarding program to assist chemists, including internationals, in overcoming the challenges of integrating into the Dutch chemical community and society.

This mission resonates deeply with Shirin, as she herself is an international chemist. Her academic journey started with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Chennai, India. In 2017, she moved to the Netherlands to pursue a master’s in Forensic Science at the University of Amsterdam.

‘I didn’t have a formal background in Analytical Chemistry, but I was introduced to the field during my master’s internship, where I focused on MS-based proteomics for body fluid identification,’ Shirin shares. ‘Despite the challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed the research. This experience inspired me to continue in the field, leading me to pursue a PhD in the same area. My doctoral research delves into the applications of MS-based proteomics in forensic science, addressing questions at the source level (what?) and the activity level (when?) of forensic evidence.’

As Shirin is reaching the finish line of her PhD, she is already focused on her next chapter. ‘I began looking for a role that would align with my passion for science communication, fostering connections, and making a difference—big or small. I’m thrilled to have found that opportunity as a Community Manager at KNCV, starting in January 2025.’

In her personal life, Shirin resides in The Hague with her husband and their three cats. When she’s not busy with work, Shirin loves to travel (or plan her next adventure), run, read, build Lego creations, attend music concerts, explore the diverse restaurants in Chinatown (she’s a big fan of Asian cuisine), and volunteer at Soepbus in The Hague.

We are excited to work alongside Shirin and can’t wait to see the results of this new role. If you have a question for Shirin, want to say hello, or share any ideas, don’t hesitate to reach out to her at salex@kncv.nl.
