The Master in Industrial Ecology is a co-operation between Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. Both universities are at the forefront of the field of Industrial Ecology. But what exactly is Industrial Ecology? And how does this joint degree master programme look like?
Programme overview
Industrial Ecology is an emerging scientific discipline that takes a systemic approach to sustainability problems. An interdisciplinary approach, integrating an engineering, environmental and social science perspective is essential for sustainable development.
During the first semester of the first year you will gain a broad understanding of the field by acquiring thorough knowledge and skills needed for the analysis of sustainability challenges, and the design and implementation of solutions. In the second semester you will focus on the integration and application of the knowledge and skills gained in the first semester by doing a project on an urban or industry system. In addition, you can choose from a big variety in specialisation courses from both TU Delft and Leiden University. The second year is aimed at further integration and application, in the form of a second project course in collaboration with an external commissioner, and your thesis research project.
Why study Industrial Ecology?
- You will learn relevant concepts, methods and tools to help you identify, design and critically evaluate sustainability solutions and their implementation. Useful skills that are highly requested in the field.
- We offer an international, multidisciplinary community, where all students concretely contribute to sustainability also using their own specific bachelor’s knowledge and cultural background. We believe that this multidisciplinary approach is the best way to move forward.
- You will be inspired by professors from two world-class universities, who are at the forefront of the field of Industrial Ecology.
- Collaboration with third parties, such as national or international partner universities, NGOs, industrial partners, or government institutes is encouraged and facilitated within several courses and the thesis research project.
With a joint-degree diploma in Industrial Ecology you are well prepared for broad array of career prospects in business, industry and government, as well as non-governmental organisations, universities and research institutes.
Student story:
Kim: “I chose the MSc Industrial Ecology (IE) programme to tackle sustainability challenges hands-on, at every level. Its mix of disciplines perfectly matched my varied interests. What drew me most to IE was its holistic approach. It’s not just about solving problems; it’s about understanding how everything connects and finding solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
While I expected to learn about making industrial systems more sustainable, and I did, IE also surprised me with the concept of urban metabolism. Viewing cities as living organisms, with inputs, outputs, and a delicate balance, was eye-opening. It’s a fresh perspective with big implications for our urban future. In today’s world, we need comprehensive solutions. Additionally, what truly adds value to my experience is the sense of community within the programme.”
