Environmental labs worldwide are increasingly changing from chemical oxygen demand (COD) to total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. For wastewater analysis, some countries prescribe TOC in their national guidelines. With the multi N/C x300 series, Analytik Jena offers user-friendly analyzers at low total costs of ownership.
Sophisticated particle handling
Systems used in environmental analysis encounter particulate samples and therefore must be able to prevent carryover and clogging. For wastewater analysis, the DIN EN ISO 20236 standard requires to prove the particle handling capabilities of systems by the cellulose test. This test shows the recovery and repeatability of a cellulose suspension with a particle size of up to 100 μm at a TOC concentration of 100 mg/L. The devices of the multi N/C x300 series score excellently with recovery rates above 94 % and RSDs below 0.5% thanks to their sophisticated particle handling. The direct injection systems operate without any valves and tubes and inject samples from top to bottom, ensuring complete sample transfer. The loop injection systems dispense directly from the injection loop and feature large inner diameters and an integrated backwash function.
Broad working range and clever automation
Laboratories encountering different sample types and high sample volumes need time saving instrumentation. The multi N/C x300 systems cover a measuring range from 4 µg/L to 30,000 mg/L thanks to their wide-range Focus Radiation NDIR detector and can measure samples from ultrapure water to wastewater without prior sample dilution. They analyze samples quickly in the NPOC mode with parallel purge and analysis, thus increasing throughput. TOC and TNb (total bound nitrogen) are analyzed completely simultaneously. Automatic control of system tightness and gas flow rates by the VITA flow management system ensures correct results and calibration stability for up to one year.
Robust and easy to handle
The multi N/C x300 analyzers operate at up to 950 °C and combust compounds with high thermal stability completely. They are virtually maintenance-free and have all consumables clearly arranged and accessible via the soft-close front doors. Easy replacement without tools is ensured by the FAST connector technology. No chemical desiccants need to be replaced as the sample gas is dried using a Peltier element. The newintuitive software enables easy and efficient operation.
Low total costs of ownership
Over the product lifetime, TOC/TNb analysis is often cheaper than COD measurement. The savings mainly result from the omission of UV/Vis test kits, but also from faster measurement times and lower personnel costs. In a case study, Analytik Jena shows annual cost reductions of up to 17,000 EUR per year on kits alone, assuming sample throughputs of a typical industrial quality control laboratory.
