Chemistry shapes our world – from the air we breathe to the materials we use daily. Ready to master the art of creating, detecting, and understanding molecules? Our joint Master’s programme in Chemistry, offered by the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, opens doors to the frontiers of chemical science.
Why choose chemistry in Amsterdam?
When you choose to study Chemistry in Amsterdam, you benefit from the combined expertise and extensive networks of two leading universities whilst studying in a vibrant city. Our programme gives you access to guidance from internationally renowned scientists. With our flexible curriculum and strong connections to both industry and academic partners, you’ll be perfectly positioned to pursue your specific interests and career goals.
Programme structure
We offer four specialised tracks to help you chart your own programme:
- Analytical Sciences: Master cutting-edge detection and analysis methods
- Molecular Sciences: Dive deep into synthetic and computational chemistry
- Science for Energy and Sustainability: Address global challenges through chemistry
- Chemistry of Life: Explore the interface of chemistry and biology
Each track offers a unique blend of compulsory and elective courses, ensuring a comprehensive education. In your first year, you choose courses that align with your interests and career plans. – Courses cover a large diversity of options: from fundamentals in separation sciences to spectroscopic analysis, from synthetic and computational chemistry; or from environmental chemistry to chemical biology. In your second year, you apply your knowledge during a research internship (7-10 months) and literature study (2 months), working on real-world challenges alongside experienced researchers.
Broaden your horizon
Our programme offers unique opportunities to expand beyond traditional chemistry. For those interested in different aspects of science, we offer a Major (60 EC) in Science Communication, Teaching, or Science in Society. If you’re looking to complement your chemical expertise, you can choose a Minor (30 EC) in Teaching, Sustainability, or Collective Futures. For HBO graduates, we provide a dedicated pre-master programme (30 EC) to ensure a smooth transition into the master’s programme.
Career perspectives
Our graduates find success across a wide range of sectors. Many pursue research positions at prestigious institutes like TNO, KNMI, and SRON, while others drive innovation at chemical industry leaders such as AkzoNobel and DSM. The analytical mindset and problem-solving skills you’ll develop are highly valued in environmental consultancy, the energy sector, financial institutions, and ICT companies. For those passionate about academic research, our programme provides an excellent foundation for pursuing a PhD.
