Apply advanced knowledge to develop sustainable, biobased industrials or medical applications.
Are you fascinated by the essential processes within living cells and eager to understand life at the molecular level? Do you aspire to excel in biomolecular sciences, applying advanced knowledge to answer fundamental questions and develop sustainable, biobased industrial or medical applications? The master’s degree programme in Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Groningen offers a pathway to these exciting opportunities.
Biomolecular sciences is a very internationally oriented research field that benefits from strong multidisciplinary know-how in genetics, microbiology, molecular cell biology, computational and structural biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology and systems biology. During this 2-year master’s programme, you will acquire in-depth knowledge and skills through upper-level theoretical and practical training. You will become highly competent in biomolecular sciences, as well as in the more applied aspects of these fields. This will give you excellent prospects for an independent career in an academic, medical, or industrial research environment, or as a scientific consultant for the public or private sector.
Programme highlights:
- In-depth knowledge and skills
Explore how biomolecules interact, within cells and organisms, aiming to explain life’s complex mechanisms and address real-world challenges in health, industry, and the environment.
- Extensive research experience
Spend 50% of your time in a research lab, gaining practical experience that builds and refines your research skills. Choose from a variety of techniques and specializations, ranging from hands-on molecular biology, cell biology or biochemistry in the wet lab, to advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, imaging or computational modeling and simulation of complex molecular systems.
- Connection to internationally-oriented research institute
The programme has strong affiliations with the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), allowing you to engage with an internationally recognized community conducting cutting-edge research.
- Flexible and supportive learning environment
Enjoy a well-structured, flexible curriculum with dedicated guidance, yet ample room to explore and follow your personal preferences and career plans.
- Career-ready training
The programme offers an excellent preparation for independent careers in academia, industry, or the public sector.
As a student shares, “I chose the Master’s in Biomolecular Sciences because of the compelling research topics and labs. But I was also drawn to how the programme actively prepares you for a scientific career, whether in academia or industry. I am currently completing an internship in a lab at the GBB where I am conducting a study examining the impact of bacteria in the intestines of Parkinson’s patients on the effectiveness of their medication. Next year, I hope to start a PhD programme after completing my master’s.”
Entry requirements to the programme are a Bachelor’s degree with a specialisation in Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Biology, Molecular Biology, or Molecular Genetics. The Master’s programme in Biomolecular Sciences employs a selection procedure. Selection is based on your academic performance and your reasons for wanting to enrol in the master’s programme.
